Nursing Assistant Training - Certified CNA

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 120-hour (40 hours of Theory, 25 hours of Laboratory and 55 hours of Clinical hours) prepares individual to work as caregivers and assist licensed nurses in various health care settings such as nursing home, hospital or home health care. This course teaches the fundamentals of the Nursing Assistant (Classroom, Laboratory and Clinical) using equipment which simulates real on-the-job situations. All subjects and lectures are taught along with practical hands-on as well as specific safety information related to the topics.The students will be prepared to pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Competency Examination to become Certified Nurse Aides (CNA).


COURSE OBJECTIVES

The student will have the entry level skills and will be able to demonstrate the safe working procedures necessary to perform the entry level duties of a Nursing Assistant. This course will also:

  1. Introduce the student to the health care field of Nursing assistants.
  2. Provide students with experiences in the classroom and in the clinical areas that results in development of basic competencies required of Nursing Assistants.
  3. Provide the student with competencies that are prerequisite to specific areas and entry level employment.
  4. Provide the student with training required by state and Federal laws for entry level employment as a Certified Nursing Assistant after successfully passing the State Competency and Certification Examination.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES

Applicants residing in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the past two (2) years will complete and submit a Pennsylvania State Police - Criminal History Record information report before the first day of class. An applicant residing in pennsylvania less than two years must obtain FBI clearance and CHRI report. An applicant's CHRI report and FBI report must be in compliance. It cannot contain prohibitive offenses as cited in Pennsylvania ACT 14. Physical examination dated within one year is required. The physical examiniation must include documentation of a negative 2-step Mantoux Test that is dated within a year of starting class. If a PPD is documented as positive, a negative chest x-ray less than five (5) years old must be submitted. High school doploma, transcript or G.E.D equivalent required. Positive references (three references is required).  


I.V Therapy

Intravenous (IV) Therapy and Blood Draw​

If you are a licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN), our I.V therapy and Venipuncture training will help you gain the knowledge and technical skills needed to safely set up, initiate, maintain and discontinue I.V therapies and blood withdrawal in a clinical setting.


COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course work consists of both lecture hours and hands-on laboratory.

Lecture topics include:

  • Psychological preparation of the patient.
  • Universal precautions for infection control.
  • Indications and clinical implications for intravenous and blood withdrawal.

Clinical topics include:

  • Preparation of intravenous equipment
  • Administration of IV medication
  • Blood withdrawal
  • How to safely choose the correct vein
  • Skin puncture
  • infection control

In addition, each student must complete a minimun of three (3) individually supervised successful venipunctures in the laboratory and passed the final examination in other to receive a certificate of completion.

Course Outcomes

The intravenous therapy and venipuncture training is graded on a pass/fail basis. Graduates of this program are awarded a certificate of completion from Dotlen Academy of Science. The school is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing as a provider of I.V Therapy training.


Note: This is a non-credit-bearing course. Students must not assume that this course will be accepted for transfer credit at another institution. This course does not qualify for the Title IV federal financial aid funds. The institution does not offer job placement assistance for any of its courses; finding a job is the sole responsibility of each student.

CPR & FIRST AID Training

Dotlen Academy of Science provides CPR and First Aid training to members of the community, healthcare professionals and other various institutions. Classes are usually held at the Norristown campus but the school can also provide on-site training at your facility on request.
